Beyond Ghibli: Anime Movie Nights - "Your Name" (Makoto Shinkai, 2016)

What:

We have officially run out of Studio Ghibli films! But let's continue with the spirit of our Ghibli Movie Nights by watching some other wonderful anime that Hayao Miyazaki himself would have been proud to conceive and direct!

  • When: Every Friday at 8:30 PM (ending approx. by 11:00 pm)
  • Where: KCECH 1938 Lounge (snacks and refreshments provided)
  • No RSVP required: just show up, and feel free to bring your friends!

This Friday, we are screening Makoto Shinkai's marvellous 君の名は。, Kimi no Na wa (Your Name, 2016), which has received several accolades and broken numerous box office records. It is one of the highest-grossing Japanese films of all time: number one in China, and second only to Spirited Away in Japan and to Howl's Moving Castle in South Korea. The soundtrack of the film, by J-pop band Radwimps, is acknowledged as being one of the factors behind its success, as is Shinkai's stunningly realistic animation.

But what really captivates viewers is the plot, which has been described as an ode to love and empathy. “Once in a while when I wake up, I find myself crying. The dream I must have had I can never recall. But the sensation that I’ve lost something lingers for a long time after I wake up. I’m always searching for something, for someone.”  These are the opening words by the main characters Mitsuha (a small-town girl living in Itomori, in the countryside of Gifu Prefecture, who longs for a more exciting existence) and Taki (a boy living in the bustling city of Tokyo, who feels a bit like a misfit and aspires to become an artist). What begins as a cute coming-of-age and fantasy story (about a comet passing close to Earth and the unlikely connection between two strangers... through body-swapping!), will suddenly gain an unexpected mind-twisting, time-bending, philosophical depth.

This movie will move you to the core and will stay with you forever. We hope you will join us!
