Malpaso Cuban Dance Company - with Lidia & Óscar

What:

Come with us to Penn’s Zellerbach Theatre (at the Annenberg Center for the Arts) for this awesome show on Friday, October 6 @ 8 PM! We will be leaving from KCECH at 7:30 pm, after the Spanish Table. Meet us at the private dining room (beside the dining hall, behind the stairs):

Making its Penn Live Arts debut, Cuba’s hottest contemporary troupe shares a little slice of Havana. With the “fluid, sexy athleticism” (Miami New Times) and the collaborative creative process for which its known, Malpaso Dance Company explores the genesis and evolution of Cuban social dances, from rumba to salsa, which burst with the rhythms, moves and culture of this vibrant country. It is led by its three original founders: resident choreographer and artistic director Osnel Delgado, executive director Fernando Sáez and associate artistic director Daile Carrazana. They are often accompanied by Grammy Award-winning, Cuban-American composer and pianist Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (who performed at UPenn’s Annenberg Center last spring!).

The program for the night will include:

  • Indomitable Waltz (2016): “an exploration, an approach to the soul, under extreme or intense emotional circumstances.”
  • INTERMISSION
  • La Última Canción (2022): “a tribute to the iconic Cuban singer Bola de Nieve. It is an inquiry into the feeling of loss, an exploration of the uncertainty of existence.”
  • INTERMISSION
  • A Dancing Island (World Premiere): “a celebration of the dense social dances and musical tradition of Cuba, a journey from rumba to son.”

If you would like to go, please email Lidia (lleon@upenn.edu) and bring $5 to Jessica at the House Office (EH112) by Wednesday 10/04. (Tickets are $10, but KCECH can cover half the cost 😉). If for any reason you're unable to make the payment, let Jessica know, and we can work it out.

When:

Friday October 6th, 2023 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM
