Ballets Jazz Montréal "Essence" - with Lidia & Óscar

What:

Come with us to Penn’s Zellerbach Theatre (at the Annenberg Center for the Arts) for this awesome show on Friday, February 9 @ 8 PM! We will be leaving from KCECH at 7:30 pm, after the Spanish Table. Meet us at the private dining room (beside the dining hall, behind the stairs):

One of the world’s greatest contemporary dance companies, Ballets Jazz Montréal (BJM) celebrates its 50th anniversary! Their explosive, powerful, and feel-good dances have dazzled and excited audiences for half a century. It all began in 1972, with dancers from Eva von Genscy’s school in Quebec, who performed works mixing ballet technique with jazz, creating hip and hot choreographies --later fusing jazz with theatre, circus, visual arts, urban styles, and new music. In 2021, BJM appointed Alexandra Damiani as artistic director. You may recall seeing her portray the wildly cruel ballet mistress in Darren Aronofsky’s sensational film, Black Swan; or working with Tanisha Scott on Cardi B’s performance for the 2019 BET Awards!

The tribute program for the night will include works by three female choreographers:

  • We Can’t Forget About What’s His Name by company member Ausia Jones ruminates on feelings of uncertainty and how it influences moments of connection.
  • (Pause)
  • Crystal Pite’s critically acclaimed Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue explores classic storylines that invite the audience to determine who exactly rescues whom, and
  • (Intermission)
  • Completing the repertoire, Aszure Barton’s Les Chambres des Jacques creates “a world of wonder” (The Boston Globe) that’s “full of surprise and humor, emotion and pain.” (The New York Times).

If you want a taste, you can check this 1-minute video on Youtube. 🤩

In addition, there is a free 90-minute masterclass for high school and college students on Saturday, February 10 at 9:00 am. (We will not be attending, because our dance skills amount to zero! 😆). If you are interested, you can register here.

If you would like to go, please email Lidia (lleon@upenn.edu) and bring $5 to Jessica at the House Office (EH112) by Thursday 2/8 at 4:00 pm. (Tickets are $10, but KCECH can cover half the cost 😉). If for any reason you're unable to make the payment, let Jessica know, and we can work it out.
