In this talk, I consider some of the challenges and failures of representing the history of slavery in public spaces. I look closely at some of these challenges in Virginia, including in Richmond, where debates continue about what to do with Confederate statues. I also look at the minimal recognition of Nat Turner's rebellion in Virginia and the choice of Harriet Tubman rather than Ida B. Wells to appear on 20 dollar bills.
