Faculty Chat with Prof. Susan Sorenson

What:

This coming month, four of my past faculty members have agreed to come to our house to have dinner with you! This will not be a big lecture in 1938; instead, we want to gather small groups of interested students to talk with one faculty member casually both about the work they do, and their life through and outside academia (how they came to their field, subject area, and position; what they engage with in their free time, and anything else you want to know from or about them!)

Susan Sorenson, Professor of Social Policy and Health & Societies (my major!) will be coming this Wednesday, October 2 at 5:30pm. She came to the School of Social Policy and Practice from the UCLA School of Public Health, and is now the Faculty Director of the Ortner Center on Violence & Abuse, an interdisciplinary study center for violence. She teaches coursework on family and sexual violence, as well as a student-directed course on foundational public health principles for undergrads, and has published on the epidemiology and prevention of violence, including the areas of homicide, suicide, sexual assault, child abuse, battering, and firearms. She helped establish violence against women as a public health issue and furthered the study of firearms as a consumer product. A primary focus of her work is the social context in which violence occurs, specifically, the norms that shape whether and how violence is tolerated.
