What is Perspectives in Humanities?
Perspectives in Humanities (PIH) is a living-learning program at the University of Pennsylvania. This college house-sponsored program has members who share common academic and social interests. A living-learning program is just like a club, except that its members live together in order to meet other people who share their interests. PIH is nonetheless open to all (undergraduate) members of the Penn community - we also have members who don’t live with us, but attend our events and activities.
Our History
The Perspectives in Humanities program was founded in 1995 as a living-learning program in residence on the 4th floor of Kings Court/English College House. Since then, the program has expanded to include many non-residential members. Today, more than 200 Penn students are involved in the Perspectives in Humanities program.
Our Mission
PIH is dedicated to enhancing the intellectual experience of Penn undergraduates with a specific interest in the humanities. PIH regularly initiates and participates in a wide variety of activities, ranging from the academic to community service oriented, or the simply recreational. Through events like the Forum for Penn Authors and frequent dinner discussions, the Program has built strong relations with members of the Penn faculty. Members participate in and attend many different cultural events each year, both on campus and throughout Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington D.C.

The interests of our members shape our activities. Ultimately, it is our goal to foster the appreciation of the humanities beyond the classroom setting, where students feel comfortable discussing ideas and concepts, both formally and socially.
